Are Tissue Cassettes Reusable or Disposable?

Why histology tissue cassettes are treated as disposable consumables — and how that differs from inkless UV laser cassette printer consumables.

Tissue cassettes used in histology are disposable consumables. They hold specimens during processing and embedding, keep tissue submerged in reagents, and are made from plastics designed to resist common histological solvents. Labs do not wash and reuse processing cassettes the way they might reprocess glassware.

That disposable cassette is separate from printer consumables. Inkjet and thermal cassette printers add ink or ribbons on top of each cassette. Why cassettes are disposable

Disposable cassette vs archive retention

Disposable does not mean “throw away immediately after staining.” Many labs retain paraffin blocks (cassette + embedded tissue) for years under institutional or regulatory retention policies. Prefer precise language: UV laser removes ink and ribbons from routine labeling. It does not mean “zero maintenance” or “nothing to replace ever.” Filter and service planning still belong in procurement questions for the manufacturer channel.

Budget cassettes as specimen consumables; budget the printer for durability, capacity, and marking method. Mixing those lines confuses ROI conversations.

Practical questions:

  1. How many cassettes per day (standard vs biopsy)?
  2. How much do you spend today on ink, ribbons, or rework from unreadable IDs?
  3. Does your protocol punish surface marks in clearing?
  4. Do archive retrievals fail because faces no longer scan?
